When I find something that I like it easily take over my life. From when I was about ten to eighteen my favorite activity was to read a book. Plenty of books very consumed over the years, but later on the reading diminished. Not because it wasn't fun anymore, but because I discovered more things that also were fun, perhaps even more fun.

Right now I hardly remember when I last read a book. Feels very tragic.

I've been thinking some on how it ended up like this, from several books per week to a few per year. A part of the explanation is of course that it's so much that I want to do with my time and to create something new feels slightly more important than to read something that someone else has made. In addition to that books aren't as available as when I was younger and went to school in the big city. The library was right next to the bus stop and the bus didn't really depart every ten minutes, so that meant that I spend quite a lot of time at the library.

Now I'm not in town very often. I miss the nice library.

A solution is of course audiobooks, those you can listen to while your hands and eyes are occupied with something else, but it's not quite as good as being alone with the book. You can't reread, take a pause and think, you are sort of at the mercy of the reader.

But I'll give it a try anyway. A literary experience it is none the less.

The thing that got me thinking of all this was a post at Knitbuddies with a list of 100 books made by the BBC's viewers in 2003. Kitty had read 74 of the books in the list, I didn't really reach that number, not by far. However I can add that it's possible that I've missed a book I've read, my memory isn't all that great and the English titles may have confused me.

När jag hittar något som jag gillar så tar det lätt över mitt liv. Från det att jag var ca tio till arton var min favoritsysselsättning att läsa en bok. En hel del hanns med under de åren, men sen avtog läsandet. Inte för att det inte var roligt längre, utan för att jag upptäckte fler saker som också var roliga, kanske till och med roligare.

Just nu kommer jag knappt ihåg när jag senast läste en bok. Känns väldigt tragiskt.

Jag har funderat lite på varför det har blivit så här, från flera böcker i veckan till några per år. En del av förklaringen är så klart att det är så mycket som jag vill ägna min tid åt och att skapa något nytt själv känns aningen viktigare än att läsa något som någon annan har gjort. Dessutom så är böcker inte riktigt lika tillgängliga som det var när jag var yngre och gick i skola i den stora staden. Biblioteket låg precis vid busshållplatsen och bussarna gick inte direkt var tionde minut, så det betydde att jag spenderade rätt mycket tid på biblioteket.

Nu är jag väldigt sällan inne i stan. Saknar det fina biblioteket.

En lösning är förstås ljudböcker, det kan man ju lyssna på medan man har händerna och ögon sysselsatta med något annat, men det är inte riktigt lika bra som att vara ensam med sin bok. Man kan inte läsa om, stanna upp och tänka till, man är liksom utlämnad till den som läser.

Men jag ska ge det ett försök. En litterär upplevelse blir det ju ändå.

Det som fick mig att tänka på det här var ett inlägg på Knitbuddies med en lista på 100 böcker som BBC tittare gjort 2003. Looks like I've read seventeen of the books. But my life isn't over yet. I did also see a name in the list that seemed familiar, Nevil Shute, looked up the Swedish title and came to the conclusion that I've read that one too. A very fine book if I remember correctly. So now they are eighteen.

Sjtton av de hundra böckerna har jag alltså läst. Men livet är inte slut än. Såg dessutom precis ett namn som verkade bekant på listan Nevil Shute, kollade upp den svenska titeln och kom fram till att den har jag läst. Bra bok om jag inte minns fel. Så nu är det arton.

My beloved friggebod has been frequently mentioned in this blog. But what is a friggebod really and why do I have one?

Min kära friggebod har nämnts flitigt i den här bloggen. Men vad är en friggebod egentligen och varför har jag en?

The friggebod rules

According to Swedish law, a friggebod has to follow certain rules. The most important ones are, that they may not be larger than 15 square meters (the limit was 10 square meters when mine was built), that the height from the ground to the roof-ridge may not exceed 3 meters and that they must be placed on a lot where there’s already a residential building. On the other hand, there’s no need for a building permit, as long as these rules are followed.

In short, a friggebod is a small building that may be erected without a building permit, and there’s really no rules as to how it may look. But still, one could say that mine looks like a typical Swedish friggebod. The most common uses for friggebodar is as storage sheds and as guest houses. That they are used all year round, as mine is, is not that common. They are named after Birgit Friggebo, who was the minister of housing in Sweden when the friggebod rules where first introduced.

Enligt svensk lag måste en friggebod följa vissa regler. De viktigaste är, att de inte får vara större än 15 kvadratmeter (gränsen var 10 kvadratmeter när min byggdes), att höjden från marken till taknocken inte får överstiga 3 m och att de måste placeras på en tomt där det redan finns ett bostadshus. Däremot behövs det inget bygglov, så länge dessa regler följs.

En friggebod är alltså en mindre byggnad som får uppföras utan bygglov, och kan egentligen se ut hur som helst. Men man kan säga att min ser ut som en ganska typisk svensk friggebod. Vanligast är att friggebodar används som förråd och gäststugor. Att de används året runt, som min, är inte så vanligt. Namnet kommer från Birgit Friggebo som var bostadsminister i Sverige när friggebodsreglerna först infördes.

I get my own friggebod

Once I had plans to buy a parrot. Then my mom told me that that would not work, since my brother was allergic. One day I found a solution. I saw a friggebod in a advertisement leaflet. If I lived in a friggebod, I could have the parrot there.

I never bought a parrot, but I did get a friggebod! Bought at Noliamässan in Umeå and built by my father and I. My parents don’t usually give their children everything they point at, but what they really want, they usually get. Right at this time, my parents also had two more children, so it wasn’t to bad that the oldest one didn’t need a room in the large house anymore.

En gång i tiden planerade jag att köpa en papegoja. Då sa min mamma att det inte skulle gå, eftersom min bror var allergisk. En dag kom jag på en lösning. Jag såg en friggebod i ett reklambad. Om jag bodde i en friggebod skulle jag ju kunna ha en papegoja där.

Det blev aldrig någon papegoja, men en friggebod fick jag! Inhandlad på Noliamässan i Umeå och uppbyggd av min far och jag. Mina föräldrar har inte för vana att ge sina barn allt de pekar på, men det man verkligen vill ha, det brukar man få. Just vid den här tiden fick mina föräldrar även två till barn, så det var inte så dumt, att ett av barnen inte behövde ha ett rum i det stora huset längre.

Friggeboden is decorated

First we found the wallpaper border. It was perfect, in a pretty pattern in blue, green and orange. Orange is my favorite color, and blue and green isn’t to bad either. The wallpaper got to be blue and then we found the perfect fabric for the curtains, the colors where exactly the same as on the border. Since it is quite cold on the floor, despite isolation and radiator, a wool rug was purchased, blue with brown-orange and green details. Being the orange-lover I am, I had wished for a orange friggebod. That was not okey with my mom, it had to be red like the main house. But I could paint the inside of the entrance door whichever color I wanted, it became orange.

The furnishing consisted of a bed, a desk , a closet, an armchair, a chest and a hatrack in the same orange color as the inside of the door. The bed was borrowed from my uncle, I had had the desk since I was little, the closet wasn’t that big, the armchair was a birthday present and the chest was bought right when the friggebod was first decorated.

Först hittade vi bården. Helt perfekt var den, fint mönster i blått, grönt och orange. Orange är min favoritfärg, och blått och grönt är inte så dumt heller. Tapeterna fick bli blåa och sen hittade vi det perfekta tyget till gardiner, färgerna var ju precis detsamma som de på bården. Eftersom det trots isolering och element, inte var direkt varmt på golvet, inhandlades också en yllematta, i blått, med brunorange och gröna detaljer. Eftersom jag älskar orange ville jag så klart ha en orangemålad friggebod. Men det gick inte min mor med på, den målades röd som det stora huset istället. Ytterdörrens insida kunde jag dock måla i vilken färg som helst, så den fick bli orange.

Möblerna bestod av en säng, ett skrivbord, en garderob, en fåtölj, en byrå och så en hatthylla, i samma orangefärg som insidan av ytterdörren. Sängen var ett lån från min morbror, skrivbordet hade jag haft sen jag var liten, garderoben var inte så stor, fåtöljen var en födelsedagspresent och byrån köptes i samband med att friggeboden inreddes.

The first time in friggeboden

From the first time I loved my friggebod. It was only mine! I could be all alone, without any siblings bothering me. Although I wasn’t all alone, I had my dog, Kelso, with me all the time. Since I had really young siblings and parents who worked in the evenings, my brother (who is almost as old as me) and I took turns looking after the small children in the evenings. Of course I like the evenings without babysitting the best. Then I was in my friggebod, listened to the radio, made my homework, read and drew.

But I got older, and one day I moved south and was mostly at home with my friggebod during the summers. It was never quite the same. It was more fun to be in the large house with my family and it wasn’t as interesting to keep it neat and tidy in friggeboden, which is quite important when it’s so small. After a few years, my dog was gone too, and friggeboden felt even lonelier, he had always kept me company there.

Från första början älskade jag min friggebod. Den var ju bara min! Där kunde man vara helt ensam, utan småsyskon som störde. Fast helt ensam var jag aldrig, min hund, Kelso, var alltid med mig. Eftersom jag hade riktigt små syskon och föräldrar som jobbade på kvällen, fick jag och min bror, han som nästan är lika gammal som jag, passa småbarnen varannan kväll. Bäst var såklart de kvällar utan barnpassning. Då var jag i min friggebod, lyssnade på radio, gjorde läxor, läste och ritade.

Men jag blev ju äldre och en dag flyttade jag söderut och var mest hemma hos min friggebod på somrarna. Då blev det aldrig riktigt samma sak. Det var roligare att vara inne i det stora huset med min familj, och det blev inte lika intressant att hålla det fint och ordnat i friggeboden, ganska viktigt när det är så litet. Efter några år fanns inte heller min hund kvar, och då kändes förstås friggeboden ännu ensammare, han hade ju alltid hållit mig sällskap där.

But as you know, friggeboden has gotten a new life now!
