The plan

The five spring garments where planned last summer. This is just a shape that I'm really interested in.

De fem vår-plaggen planerades förra sommaren. Det här är bara en form som jag tycker är intressant.

The pattern

The pattern construction process didn't really go as planned. I had made several toils in January, but I got a new idea and started over and was very pleased with what I had done. Until I remembered that the front and back should look the same cause I wanted it to work both ways. Then I just made a mix of the front and back I had done. Made a toile and a few minor changes and decided it was fine. The knit fabric is kind of forgiving anyway.

Mönsterkonstruktionsprocessen gick inte riktigt som planerat. Jag hade gjort flera toiler i januari, men så fick jag en ny ide och började om och var väldigt nöjd med vad jag hade gjort. Tills jag kom ihåg att fram och bakstycket skulle va lika eftersom jag ville att den skulle funka båda vägarna. Då gjorde jag bara en blandning av det fram- och bakstycke som jag hade gjort. Sydde en toile och gjorde en del små ändringar av mönstret och bestämde att det fick duga. Det stickade tyget är rätt förlåtande ändå.

The process

I started to sew this garment in the middle of the night during another hockey game. Then I realized I had made a mistake and I thought I would be forced to drop out of the contest and everything. The sleeves consists of two symmetrical pieces, which means four pieces in total. I had only cut out two and I did not have a lot of fabric left. But there was enough to piece another sleeve together. I felt so relieved!

Jag borjade sy det här plagget i mitten av natten under en annan hockeymatch. Sen insåg jag att jag hade gjort ett misstag och trodde att jag skulle bli tvungen att hoppa av tävlingen och allt. Ärmarna består av två symmetriska delar, vilket betyder att det behövs fyra totalt. Jag hade bara klippt ut två och hade inte så mycket tyg kvar. Men det fanns tillräckligt för att få ihop till en ärm till. Jag kände mig så lättat!

The result

How can't I like this cardigan? I just feel so grateful that it has two sleeves! I like the ugly sleeve with an extra seam and the fabric the wrong way as much as the nice looking one.

Hur kan jag inte gilla den här koftan? Jag känner mig så tacksam för att den har två ärmar! Jag gillar den fula ärmen med en extra söm och tyget på fel håll lika mycket som den fina.

Before I totally forget about it, the fabric moved around quite a bit. Keep that in mind until next time Frida!

The jacket.

The plan

When I decided to join the SWAP and therefore had to make a jacket I knew it had to be something with roomy sleeves, cause there's another garment with lots of fabric under the arms. I wanted to use fabric from my stash if it was possible, so I looked through what I had that could be used for an outer garment. I had wanted an outer garment that could be used with big sleeves for some time.

När jag bestämde mig för att göra SWAP:en och därför var tvungen att göra en jacka visste jag att jag måste göra något med rymliga ärmar, eftersom det är ett annat plagg som har massor av tyg under armarna. Jag ville använda tyg som jag redan hade om det var möjligt, så jag tittade igenom förrådet för att se vad jag kunde hitta som kunde användas till ett ytterplagg. Jag hade velat göra ett ytterplagg som kunde användas med stora ärmar ett tag.

I found a green wool fabric that I used in my handwoven wool coat. (I only used it on the inside, so you can't see it in the photos.) I did not have enough of that to make a whole jacket. The fabric I planned to pair it with also had a connection to the wool coat. I spun the weft yarn and when I ran out of that yarn before the warp was finished I just played with different colored linen yarns. It was so much fun, but I had no idea what to do with the result at the time.

Jag hittade ett grönt ulltyg som jag hade använt i min handvävda yllekappa. (Jag använde det på insidan, så det syns inte på bilderna.) Jag hade inte tillräckligt av det för att göra en hel jacka. Tyger som jag planerade att kombinera det med hade också en anknytning till yllekappan. Jag spann garnet till inslaget och när det garnet tog slut före varpen var slut lekte jag med olika färgade lingarner. Det var jättekul, men just då hade jag ingen aning om vad jag skulle göra med resultatet.

The pattern

Before I made the pattern I had no clear vision of the shape of the jacket, I usually have a sketch of how I want the garment to look like before I start making the pattern. This time I just made the pattern, made a toile and decided it was going to work.

Före jag gjorde mönstret hade jag ingen klar bild av formen på jackan, jag har vanligtvis en skiss på plagget som jag vill göra före jag börjar att göra mönstret. Den här gången gjorde jag bara mönstret, gjorde en toile och bestämde att det skulle funka.

The process

This has to have been one of the more pain-free garments I've ever made. It all went so fast and I also started sewing it during the Canes' game 7 victory over the New Jersey Devils. This is now my lucky jacket.

Det här måste vara en av de smärtfriaste plaggen som jag nånsin har gjort. Allt gick så fort och dessutom började jag sy ihop den under Canes match 7 vinst över New Jersey Devils. Det här är nu min lyckojacka.

The result

What can I add? I love it. But there's a few details that could be improved. The sleeves feels a bit short sometimes (you're supposed to add a bit to the sleeve length when making outer garments and I didn't) and it feels like the bust dart could be a bit further down (again, you should move the bust point down in outer garments, but I didn't do that either). But considering how fast this really went I have absolutely nothing to complain about.

Vad kan jag lägga till? Jag älskar den. Men det är några detaljer som kan förbättras. Ärmarna känns lite korta ibland (det är meningen att man ska förlänga ärmarna en aning när man gör ett ytterplagg och jag gjorde inte det) och det känns som om bystinsnittet borde sitta lite längre ner (återigen, man ska flytta ner bystpunkten på ytterplagg, jag gjorde inte det heller). Men om man tänker på hur snabbt allt gick så har jag absolut inget att klaga på.

I like skirts, to wear them and to make them. It's most fun when you've made them all by yourself. With the help of an circle it's easy to construct a skirt from scratch. If you're not entirely sure how to do it, I'm going to explain it all now!

Jag gillar kjolar, att ha dom och att sy dom. Roligast är det när man har gjort dom helt själv. Med en cirkel kan man lätt konstruera sin egen kjol. Vet du inte riktigt hur det går till så ska jag förklara allt du behöver veta nu!

The theory

In order to draw a circle you need to know it's radius (the distance from the center of the circle to it's edge). The radius can be calculated if you know the circle's circumference. You also need a number called pi (π). Pi is a long-digit number, but it's okey to calculated with 3,14 instead.

För att rita en cirkel utgår man från dess radie (avståndet från cirkelns mitt till dess ytterkant). Radien kan man räkna ut om man vet cirkelns omkrets. Man behöver också tal kallat pi (π). Pi är ett jättelångt tal, men det går bra att räkna med 3,14 istället.

I will explain how to construct half circle, three quarter circle and full circle skirts. If you for example are going to make a half circle skirt it's often enough to draw up a quarter of a circle and cut out two pieces or place it against a folded edge. Because I feel like it's easiest to start by drawing up the whole skirt the following instructions will deal with how to make just that.

Jag kommer att förklara hur man konstruerar halvcirkel-, trekvartscirkel- och helcirkelkjolar. Om man t ex ska göra en halvcirkelkjol räcker det egentligen oftast att rita upp en kvartscirkel och sedan klippa ut två delar eller lägga mot vikt kant. Eftersom jag tycker att det känns enklast att börja med att rita en hel kjol så följer nu instruktioner till att rita mönster till en sådan.

The materials

Measurements

You need two measurements. The waist measurement (or the measurement of what you want the skirt to go around) and the length of the skirt.

Du behöver två mått. Midjemåttet (eller det du vill att kjolen ska omsluta) och kjolens längd.

Calculate the radius

As I explain you now need the radius, this is how you should calculate:

Nu behövs ju som sagt var radien, så här ska du räkna:

• HALF CIRCLE: Divide the waist measurement by 3,14.

  HALVCIRKEL: Dela midjemåttet med 3,14.

• THREE QUARTER CIRCLE: Multiply the waist measurement by 2 and divide that number by 9,42.

  TREKVARTSCIRKEL: Gångra midjemåttet med 2 och dela det talet med 9,42.

• FULL CIRCLE: Divide the waist measurement by 6,28.

  HELCIRKEL: Dela midjemåttet med 6,28.

• EVEN LARGER: To make a skirt that's even wider than a full circle, make for example 3 half circles or 2 full circles and sew those together. Now you need to divide the waist measurement by 3 (for 3 half circles) or 2 (for 2 full circles). If you intend to sew to full circles together add seam allowances now, for example add 2 cm for 1 cm seam allowances. Use that number to calculate the radius according to the instructions for a half circle or full circle.

  ÄNNU STÖRRE: För att få en kjol som är vidare än en hel cirkel, gör t ex 3 halvcirklar eller 2 helcirklar och sy ihop dessa. Begin to draw

Draw a long line. It should be as long as the length of the skirt (A) + the radius (B, C or D) + the radius (B, C or D) + the length of the skirt (A). Mark those distances on the line. Draw another line from the middle of the first line in a right angel. For a half circle the second line should be as long as the radius (B) + the length of the skirt (A) and only be draw on one side of the first line. In the other cases the second line should be drawn on both sides of the first and be exactly as the first line, the two lines should intercept at the middle. Make marks for the radius (B, C or D) and the length of the skirt (A) on the new line.

Rita en lång linje. Den ska vara lika lång som kjolens längd (A) + radien (B, C eller D) + radien (B, C eller D) + kjolens längd (A). Märk ut de avstånden på linjen. Dra en till linje som går från mitten av den första linjen i en rät vinkel. För en halvcirkel ska den andra linjen vara lika lång som radien (B) + kjolens längd (A) och bara dras på ena sidan av den första linjen. Annars ska den andra linjen dras på båda sidor om den första och vara precis likadan som den första linjen, linjerna ska då mötas på mitten. Märk ut radien (B, C eller D) och kjolens längd (A) på den nya linjen.

Make the first circle

Now you need to draw two circles (or half, or three quarter), one for the waist and one for the bottom edge of the skirt. The circles center is where the two lines intercept. Start with the smaller circle. Mark out the length of the radius (B, C or D) from the center of the circle with a couple of inches in between and fill in the interspaces.

Du ska nu rita två cirklar (eller halv, eller trekvarts), en där midjan ska va och en där kjolen ska sluta. Cirklarnas mitt är där de två linjerna möts. Börja med den midre cirkeln. Märk ut en radies längd (B, C eller D) från cirkelns mitt med några centimeters mellanrum och fyll i mellanrummen.

Make the second circle

The distance from the center of the circle to the outer edge of the second circle it the radius (B, C or D) + the lenght of the skirt (A). Mark and draw that one too. Now the pattern is ready! Cut it out.

Avståndet från cirkelns mitt till ytterkanten på den andra cireln är en radie (B, C eller D) + kjolens längd (A). Märk ut och rita ut även den. Nu är mönstret färdigt! Klipp ut det.

Cut out the fabric

Remeber to add seam allowances and hems when you cut out your fabric. The pattern pieces can get quite large with these kinds of skirts. Even if you want to make a full circle skirt the fabric may not be wide enough, in that case you have to make to half circles and sew them together. Only cut the pattern in the middle.

Kom ihåg att lägga till sömsmån och fåll när du klipper ut ditt tyg. Det är lätt att mönsterdelarna till sådana här kjolar blir stora. Även om du vill göra t ex en helcirkelkjol så kanske inte tyget är tillräckligt brett, då får du göra två halvcirklar istället och sy ihop dom. Dela bara mönstret på mitten.

If you intend to make a really wide skirt from two full circles, you need to cut in the circles in order to have something to sew in. Cut open along one of the straight lines you drew in the beginning.

Om du planerar att göra en jättevid kjol av två helcirklar, måste du klippa i cirklarna för att få nått att sy i. Klipp upp längs en av de raka linjerna som du ritade från början.

Sew your skirt

When you sew your skirts together it's good to remember that a large portion on the skirt will hang on the bias and there's a great chance that the fabric will stretch differently. If you want a straight bottom hem you therefore should let the skirt hang for a few days and check if the bottom edge is straight before you hem the skirt.

När du syr ihop din kjol är det bra att tänka på att en stor del av kjolen kommer att hänga på skrådden och då är det stor chans att tyget töjer sig olika. Om man vill ha en helt rak nederkant ska man därför låta kjolen hänga några dagar och därefter kontrollera att nederkanten är jämn och fålla därefter.

The material is a satin silk. It was quite difficult to work with, but now it's over!

The Winter bodysuit

According to Wikipedia the English name for this type of garment is bodysuit. At the pattern construction course I took we made basic pattern for so many different types of garments, this is mostly just a test of the basic pattern for a bodysuit. Perhaps I'll make another if I get an idea for a more exciting style.

Under mönsterkonstruktionskursen som jag gick på gjorde vi grundmönster till jättemånga olika sorters plagg, det här är mest en test av grunden till en body. Kanske gör jag en till om jag får en idé till en roligare variant.

SWAP update

Next up is skirts, I'm praying they'll be trouble free. Although I haven't started on the patterns yet, so perhaps I should do that.

Härnäst kommer kjolar, jag hoppas att de blir lätta. Fast jag har inte börjat på mönstren än, kanske borde jag göra det.

I finally finished these yesterday. They did take a bit more time than the last pair, I think about 14 hours of sewing. I'm going to record my time more accurately, to help me cut down the time. Hopefully.

Jag gjorde äntligen färdigt de här igår. De tog lite mer tid än det förra paret, jag gissar på ca 14 timmars sömnad. Jag ska hålla mer noggrann koll på min tid, för att kunna dra ner på tiden. Förhoppningsvis.

Material

Once again, there's a fabric I'm quite excited about. The dark fabric is a cotton twill that I've had a long time. The warp is a dark blue color and the weft is orange, the effect of that is very nice, but not really visible in these photos.

Återigen är det ett tyg som jag är rätt exalterad över. Det mörka tyget är en bomullskypert som jag har haft väldigt länge. Varpen är mörkt blått och inslaget orange, effekten av det är väldigt fin, men syns inte riktigt på de här fotonen.

The pink fabric is velvet made of cotton. Love it with the other fabric.

Det rosa tyget är sammet gjort av bomull. Gillar det mycket tillsammans med det andra tyget.

Conclusion

I like them, they are fun!

I'd also like to add that my mother helped me a bit with testing the toile for them. She did a very good job.

Jag skulle också vilja tillägga att min mamma hjälpte mig lite grann med provning av toilen till de här. Hon gjorde ett bra jobb.

SWAP update

Two garments of 11 completed. I'm aiming for 2 completed garments per week. It's not totally out of reach, but there's a couple that I haven't started the pattern construction on so they may very well take longer time.

Två av 11 plagg färdiga. Jag skitar på 2 färdiga plagg i veckan. Det är inte helt omöjligt, men det är ett par som jag inte har påbörjat mönsterkonstruktionen på än så de kan mycket väl ta längre tid.

Look, they fit me at the waist!

I finished these last night. It took me two evenings/nights to sew them. Approximately 8 hours. Feels like a lot for a pair of quite simple pants. One of my goals right now is to become a faster sewer.

Jag gjorde färdigt dessa i går kväll. Det tog två kvällar/nätter att sy dom. Ungefär 8 timmar. Känns som lite mycket för ett par ganska enkla byxor. Ett av mina mål just nu är att sy snabbare.

Material

As you may have noticed I have a tendency to fall in love with fabrics that are amazing, like the orange dupioni and the grey satin. I'm in love with this fabric too. It's a quite heavy wool fabric that's fulled. It hangs very nicely. Despite it being quite heavy and thick it doesn't feel like that when worn.

Som du kanske har märkt så förälskar jag mig ofta i fantastiska tyger, som den orange dupionen och den gråa satinen. Jag är förälskad i det här tyget också. Det är ett ganska tungt ulltyg som är filtat. Det hänger väldigt fint. Trots att det är ganska tungt och tjockt så känns det inte så när det bärs.

Conclusion

The goal with this project was to make a pair of pants that fits and that are both elegant/classic and comfortable/cosy. It feels like I've achieved those goals. I'm satisfied.

Målet med det här projektet var att göra ett par byxor om passar mig och som är både eleganta/klassiska och bekväma/mysiga. Det känns som om jag har nått de målen. Jag är nöjd.

SWAP update

A long time ago I announced that I had join the SWAP contest. If you thought I had forgotten all about it, you were wrong. I've actually started to work on most of the patterns for those garments. This is the first completed garment, but I'll start sewing the other pair of pants tonight. I hope I have time to do all the garments before the deadline. I want to do that, but I want great clothes too, and there's a few other things to do until April 30th too.

För länge sen berättade jag att jag hade gått med i SWAP tävlingen. Om du trodde att jag helt hade glömt det, så hade du helt fel. Jag har faktiskt börjat arbeta på nästan alla mönster till de plaggen. Det här är det första färdiga plagget, men jag ska börja sy det andra paret byxor ikväll. Jag hoppas att jag har tid att göra alla plagg innan sista datumet. Jag vill göra det, men jag vill ha fina kläder också, och det är en del andra saker som också måste göras innan 30 april.

Step 1

Cut out the lining and sewed it together. I used a linen tabelcloth as lining and didn't add any seam allowances to the top and bottom edge.

Klippte ut fodret och sydde ihop det. Jag använde en linneduk som foder och la inte till några sömsmåner till över- och nederkanten.

This is what the inside looks like.

Step 2

Sewed the plastic things (what are they called in English?) onto the seams of the lining, and also to the sides of the back opening.

Sydde fast plastfjädrarna på fodrets sömmar, och dessutom längs ryggöppningens sidor.

Sewed the hooks and eyes to the sides of the back opening by hand.

Sydde fast hyskorna och hakarna runt ryggöppningen för hand.

Closes with hooks and eyes at the back.

Step 4

Cut out bias strips from the lining fabric and sewed them to the top and bottom edge of the lining bodice.

Klippte ut snedremsor från fodertyget och sydde fast dem längs över- och nederkanten av foderlivet.

Bias strips at the top and bottom edges.

Step 5

Cut out the outer fabric and sewed it together. This time with seam allowances added to all sides.

Klippte ut yttertyget och sydde ihop det. Den här gången med sömsmåner tillagda på alla sidor.

Step 6

Pinned the outer fabric and the lining together. Folded the seam allowances of the outer fabric over and sewed it all together by hand. All done.

Nålade ihop yttertyget och fodret. Vek in yttertygets sömsmåner och sydde ihop allt för hand. Allt klart.

The lining and outer fabric was handsewned together.
